The sailing rules

  • Safety first, never take any risks.
  • Always drive starboard (on the right) and maintain a speed that does not create waves which bother other people. The maximum speed limit in Amsterdam is 7.5 km/h.
  • You always have to give way to commercial boats (so including tour boats).
  • Always be clear in the course you're driving. Approach bridges in such a way that you're visible to potential oncoming boats.
  • Brouwersgracht
  • It's prohibited to drive a boat when under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
  • You're not allowed to drive on the IJ and through the Kostverlorenvaart. (see map) It is, however, allowed to cross the Kostverlorenvaart, but be very careful and look out for commercial boats.
  • It is not allowed to moor to trees, under or to bridges and wherever so indicated by a prohibition sign.
  • Nice sandwich
  • There are people living on and next to the water. Please respect their privacy and don't cause any unnecessary inconvenience, such as noise.
